DENVER - UNLV gave up three goals in the first nine minutes on the way to a 5-0 loss at Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon. The loss sent the Rebels to 0-8-2 on the season, 0-2 in league play, while the Pioneers improved to 6-3-1, and are in first place with a 2-0 MPSF mark.
The first goal came off a penalty kick in the third minute, following a Rebel handball in the box. Joey Mathot converted the PK for the 1-0 advantage. Collin Audley scored the Pioneers second goal in the 7th minute, taking a cross from Colin Jones and sending it to the right side of the net.
James Merriman pushed the lead to 3-0 just two minutes later, on an unassisted goal from 20 yards out. The Rebels were able to keep Denver out of the goal for the next 50 minutes, until Ben Mendozza took a cross from Audley, and shooting to the top left corner for a 4-0 edge in the 59th minute. Jacob Chase scored the final goal, heading in a cross from Mike Seager in the 63rd minute.
Denver held a 16-5 edge on shots, and 6-3 edge on corner kicks. Calvin Bailey made a total of eight saves in goal for UNLV, while Joe Willis collected two saves to earn the shutout for Denver.
UNLV will return to action on Friday, when it hosts Sacramento State at 7 pm on Peter Johann Memorial Field.
