LAS VEGAS - In a rematch of the 2005 Mountain West Conference championship game on the very same field, the results were the same though the hero was different, as UNLV junior forward Armani Rice scored a golden goal nine minutes into overtime to give the Rebels a 1-0 win over New Mexico on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win was the first of the year for UNLV in conference play, moving them to 6-8-1 overall, and 1-2 in league play. The Lobos dropped to 6-5-1, and 0-1-2 in the MWC.
Though UNLV controlled the ball for the majority of regulation, New Mexico actually got off more shots, holding a 12-9 edge when the clock first hit 90 minutes. Neither team would get off a shot in overtime however until Rice's game-winner, her third of the season. Taylor Fuentes started the play from midfield after the Rebels gained possession from New Mexico, and passed off to Rice on the left side. Rice drove into the box unmarked, and from 20 yards crossed a shot across the goal to the left post for the score in the 99th minute.
Ciera Nero earned the shutout for UNLV, coming up with four saves in the win, while Lobo goalkeeper Shannon Adragna was credited with six saves. New Mexico finished with a 12-10 edge on shots, while UNLV led in corner kicks 5-1.
UNLV returns to action on Sunday, taking on MWC rival TCU at 1 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
