SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In what was a tight defensive battle for the majority of the game, Sacramento State prevailed over UNLV 2-1 in double-overtime in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The loss sent UNLV to 0-14-2 on the year, 0-8 in league play, while the Hornets improved to 6-10-2, and 3-4-2 in the MPSF.
The game looked as if it would go into overtime scoreless, until Sac State scored on a Ryan Rhoads blast from 35 yards out in the 87th minute. UNLV did not give up however, and would score the tying goal with just 1:31 left in the second half, when Ben Haugland took a pass from Lamar Neagle, and scored on an empty net for the goal in the 89th minute.
Sac State came up with the winning score in the 104th minute, when Josh Zimbrich chipped a shot into the box that deflected off a defender and into the goal for the 2-1 victory.
Calvin Bailey was credited with three saves in net for UNLV. Sac State held a 13-7 edge on shots, and 3-0 edge on corner kicks.
UNLV returns home for its final two games of the season this weekend, beginning with a Friday night matchup with Denver at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
