Rebels Claim Three Wins On Final Night

LAS VEGAS - UNLV Winter Invitational Results

UNLV's men's and women's swimming and diving teams won seven of the 12 events on the final night of competition on Monday to help both Rebel squads finish in second place in the team standings at the UNLV Winter Invite at Buchanen Natatorium.

UC Santa Barbara won both team titles, claiming the men's with a score of 1,062, while UNLV scored 919 for second. TCU was third at 699, with Cal State Bakersfield in fourth with 403. On the women's side, UCSB scored 993 to take first, with the Rebels in second with 839 points. TCU was third with 723.5 points, and San Diego State closed out the top four with 434.5 points.

UNLV began the night by sweeping the 1650 free, starting with Lani Seaman (16:58.08) and Marva Harpak's (17:11.65) one-two finish on the women's side. The next win for the UNLV women came in the 200 back, as Amanda Weinbrecht swam a time of 2:02.69. Bailey Kuestermeyer added the final win for the Rebel women, taking the 200 breast in 2:17.40. Kim Bonney also scored in the event, finishing fifth in 2:24.80. UNLV also placed three in the top-eight in the 100 free, as Katie Wronn and Marina Sandback both tied for fourth in 52.64, while Lauren Browning was seventh in 52.84.

Johan Claar won his first event of the invitational, claiming the 1650 free in 15:35.82. Erik Ringdahl was also fourth in the event in 16:08.19. The next win was in the 100 free, as Brandon Nelms (44.89) and Richard Hortness (44.91) gave UNLV a 1-2 finish. John Byers (47.63) and Thomas Andolfsson (48.25) also finished in the top eight for the Rebels. Jonas Andersson won the 200 breast in 2:04.73, with teammate Devin Phillips swimming 2:06.69 for fourth. The final win came in the 400 free relay, as Hortness, Nelms, Claar, and Byers teamed up for a time of 3:00.89.

Other top-eight finishers for the UNLV men included three in the 200 back; Jeff Ellingsen, fourth in 1:52.26, Tiger Christian, fifth in 1:52.71, and Phillips, sixth in 1:52.83.

UNLV will break for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 12 at Florida Atlantic.
