ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV sophomore sprinter Ashley Owens set the school indoor track and field record in the 60 meters and a total of five Rebels placed in the top 10 in events at the Albuquerque Invitational on Saturday.
Owens, a transfer from LSU, finished with a blistering time of 7.27 in the 60 meters, winning the championship in the event and setting the Rebel record in the process. Owens was clocked at 7.25, but with the elevation conversion it is a time of 7.27 since Albuquerque is at 5,000+ feet. The previous best time was 7.28, set by Ayanna Hutchinson during the 2000 indoor season. This is the second-straight meet that Owens has won the 60 meters, as she took top honors in the event last weekend at the United Heritage Invitational.
Fellow sophomore Brittney Bullocks also had a top-five finish at the meet held at the Convention Center as she took fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.18. Deanna Appuglise finished eighth in the event with a time of 57.03. Jennifer Shearer added a ninth-place finish in the mile with a time of 5:34.20 and UNLV's other top-10 finish on the track was from its 1600 meter relay team, which finished fourth with a time of 3:51.31.
Away from the track Monique Humphries earned a pair of top-10 finishes for the Rebels in the field. She came in eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 54'-5.25" and added a 10th-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 40'-4.25".
UNLV will return to the Convention Center in two weeks for the MWC Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 23-25.
