ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV sophomore Ashley Owens shattered her own Rebel and MWC records in winning the 60 meters Saturday at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Owens ran a blazing 7.20 to win the event and automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be held Match 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark. Just two weeks earlier Owens had set the UNLV and MWC mark in the event when she ran a 7.27 at the Albuquerque Invitational. The 7.20 was also a track record and Owens' performance was named the most outstanding of the championships.

The transfer from LSU played a part 18 of UNLV's 29 points, as Owens also finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.39.

Lekeisha Lawson added a fourth place finish in the 60 meters with a time of 7.61 and the 4x400 relay team finished third with a time of 3:48.74. Deanna Appuglise, Ashley Patin, Starema Flood and Brittney Bullocks ran legs on the team.

Colorado State edged BYU for the team title as the Rams scored 156.50 points to the Cougars 155.50, marking the first time in MWC history that a team other than BYU won the women's indoor title. TCU finished third (98), San Diego State came in fourth (76), followed by New Mexico (57), Utah (42), Wyoming (31), UNLV and Air Force (16).

On the men's side BYU won with 206 points, Colorado State finished second with 143 and TCU rounded out the top three with 106 points.

UNLV opens its outdoor season on March 4 with the Jack Rose Invite at Long Beach, Calif.
