Rebels Post Best Start Since 1998

Feb. 4, 2006

LAS VEGAS - The 60th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team posted its second straight 7-0 shutout, this time over Weber State, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

The Rebels improved to 3-1, which marked their best start since posting the same record at the beginning of the 1998 season.

UNLV began the afternoon by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. The Rebels also did not lose a set in singles play, where WSU was without its top player, Sascha Kiehne, after the freshman twisted an ankle in doubles.

Senior Joel Kielbowicz swept Fabio Mancarella 6-1, 6-4 at the top position, Romain Massaro eased by Zach Rideout 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Brett Hunter swept Mathis Saberon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, freshman Elliot Wronski improved to 4-0 with a whitewash of Chris Williams at No. 5, David Campbell also blanked his opponent on court five and Wesley Burrows cruised 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

"It was another nice day weather-wise and results-wise" UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Even considering Weber State was not at full strength, it was nice to stay focused and not lose a set. We'll enjoy a Sunday off and then prepare for a big weekend coming up."

The Rebels host three teams next weekend beginning with New Mexico State on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
