On Deck: The Rebels ride a seven-game losing streak into Tempe, Ariz., after playing six games last week split between a single game at UCLA and five in the Judi Garman Classic (Fullerton, Calif.). Friday's doubleheader against #9/9 Arizona State will be the only action that the softball team will see after playing at least five games each of the first six weekends of the 2006 season. Earlier this season, ASU made an appearance in the UNLV Invitational and went 4-1 with one of those victories coming over the Rebels. UNLV returns to Las Vegas to host Missouri in a doubleheader on Monday (3/27) and a single game on Tuesday (3/28).

The Opponent: #9/9 Arizona State Sun Devils (33-3)

The Sun Devils currently own a four-game winning streak. After dropping its first two games in the Judi Garman Classic last weekend in Fullerton, Calif., the team defeated Cal State Fullerton to end bracket play and then won three straight to take the Consolation Bracket Championship. They began the season 19-0 before suffering their first loss (to Virginia Tech) in the UNLV Invitational on March 4. Since loss #1, the team has played 16 additional games and won 14.

~UNLV All-Time vs. ASU: Rebels trail 13-4. ~Last meeting: March 4, 2006 - ASU 4, UNLV 2.

The Last Time Out: The Rebels had a tough go last week as they traveled west to the Golden State to play six games. Of those six games, five were against teams ranked in both collegiate top-25 polls.

First up for UNLV was a single-game at Easton Stadium on the campus of #3/3UCLA on March 14. The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but allowed the Rebels to rally for four runs in the sixth inning, three on a home run hit by Kendall Fearn. UCLA took those four runs back in its half of the sixth and added two more for the final seven-run margin of 11-4.

The Rebels then headed to play in the Judi Garman Classic (March 16-19) in Fullerton, Calif. and hosted by Cal State Fullerton. On day one, Arizona's Taryne Mowatt threw a complete game no-hitter against the Rebels in a 7-0 affair. The Rebels followed the UA contest with one against Cal State Northridge. UNLV jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but saw the tides turn and the Matadors score five unanswered for a 5-1 loss.

On day two, the Rebels faced Texas A&M for the second time this season. UNLV put a three-spot on the board after one inning of play, but the Aggies knotted things up with three runs of their own before a 30-minute rain delay halted the game. After the rains, TAMU scored five more to take the game 8-3.

With an 0-3 record, UNLV was sent to the Consolation Bracket and played #24/23 Fresno State. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead and tallied five more runs to end the game in the fifth inning by implementing the eight-run rule with their 8-0 win.

With the loss to FS, the Rebels were then to play #10/11 Louisiana-Lafayette. The game was moved to nearby Golden West JC. UNLV took a 1-0 lead with a bases loaded walk in the third, but gave ULL four runs with a grand slam in the bottom of the inning. A two-run home run by Caitlyn Paus pulled UNLV within one, but the Cajuns added three for a 7-3 lead. Kelly Griego, in her second career AB, deposited a three-run home run to right to pull UNLV within one at 7-6. The Rebels had the tying run on third in the seventh, but ULL prevailed.

Time Change, Take Note: UNLV's doubleheader against New Mexico scheduled for 12 pm on April 9, has now been pushed up an hour and will begin at 11 am.
