Rebels Zagged In Season Opener

LAS VEGAS - Gonzaga scored twice in the final 13 minutes to seal the win and give the Zags a 4-1 win over UNLV in the season opener for both teams in men's collegiate soccer action on Friday afternoon.

Gonzaga got on the scoreboard first, as John Palladino hit a shot from the right side that deflected off the far post into the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. George Josten was credited with an assist on the goal. Just 30 seconds later, UNLV would tie the game at 1-1, when sophomore midfielder Nicholas Paterson's free kick hit the back of the net.

The Zags took the lead for good in the 35th minute on a goal from Grant Lundberg, off an assist from Austin Washington. Lundberg then assisted on the next score, a goal from John Reha in the 78th minute off a shot from the left wing, while Nick Barclay headed in a pass from Reha for the fourth and final goal in the 84th minute.

Brett Hafeman took the loss in goal for UNLV, allowing four goals while making seven saves in 90 minutes. Vito Higgins was in net for the Zags, and posted two saves while allowing one score. Gonzaga held a 14-4 edge on shots and 6-1 on corner kicks.

UNLV returns to action on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at UC Riverside in a 3 pm (PST) contest.
