LAS VEGAS - UC Riverside's Erasmo Solorzano scored twice, including the game-winner in the 87th minute to lift the host Highlanders to a 2-1 win over UNLV in men's collegiate soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. The Rebels, playing in their second straight road game, dropped to 0-2, while UCR improved to 1-2.
"It was a much better team effort out there today, but it was a game we should have won, and we just couldn't get that second goal," said UNLV head coach Mario Sanchez.
Solorzano tallied his first goal in the 20th minute off a free kick from 24 yards that sailed to the lower right corner of the goal. UNLV would tie the game just before the end of the half, as junior forward Hakim Zermouni headed in Nicholas Paterson's corner kick in the 44th minute.
Though UNLV held a 7-6 edge on shots in the opening 45 minutes, UCR kept up the pressure in the second half, holding a 7-2 advantage. The game-winner came with 3:28 left to play in the game, as Solorzano played a pass from Andrew Villalobos, and scored from seven yards out for the 2-1 lead.
Brett Hafeman took the loss in goal for UNLV, finishing with two saves and two goals allowed. Charles Alamo made four saves in net for UCR.
The Rebels will now return to Las Vegas, and will open their home schedule this weekend in the UNLV adidas Invitational. Oregon State and Denver play in the first game on Friday, Sept. 1, while UNLV takes on Temple at 7 pm. Temple and Denver then play on Sunday at Noon, with UNLV and Oregon State playing at 2:30 pm. All games will be played at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
