LAS VEGAS - Denver's Lleane Grimditch scored eight minutes into overtime to give the Pioneers a 1-0 victory over UNLV on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic women's soccer tournament from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss was the second straight at home for UNLV, sending them to 2-3-1 on the season, while Denver improved to 4-1-1. In the first game of the day, Arizona State used two second half goals to top UCF 2-0.
Both Denver and UNLV had good scoring chances in regulation, but neither could find the back of the net in the opening 90 minutes. In the overtime period the Rebels had a chance at the golden goal when after the ball was sent into the box, it got away from Denver goalkeeper Dani Wiley and UNLV's Armani Rice came streaking into the middle for a shot on goal. Though Wiley was out of position to make the save, a Pioneer defender was on the goalline and was just able to make the team save to keep the game scoreless.
The winning goal was set up by Taryn Hemmings, as she raced down to steal a pass in the Rebels' backfield and took off down the right side. She then sent a pass over to Grimditch in the middle of the box, and she blasted a shot to the high-right post for the score.
Alicia Lugo made three saves in goal for UNLV, while Wiley finished with two. Both teams took eight shots in the game, while the Rebels held a 7-2 edge on corner kicks.
Earlier in the day, Brittney Doty scored the game-winner for ASU in the 61st minute, heading in a cross from Kylla Sjoman. The Sun Devils added an insurance goal in the 75th minute, when Kyleyn Felts' long free kick landed at Courtney Crane's feet, who quickly scored from seven yards out.
UNLV will return to action this weekend with two road contests. The Rebels will meet San Diego on Friday at 5 pm and then finish with a contest at Southern California on Sunday at 1 pm.
