OMAHA, Neb. - Senior midfielder Tanya Roberts scored her first goal of the season and UNLV posted its second-straight shutout victory with a 1-0 win over host Creighton to win the Blue Jay Classic women's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Rebels improved to 4-5-2 with the win, while CU dropped to 5-5-1.
The winning score came in the 13th minute, when Roberts headed in a cross from Katie Carney from five feet out. UNLV then relied on goalkeeper Ciera Nero, who faced 12 shots by the Blue Jays but played strong in making seven saves to earn her third shutout of the year.
Both teams took 12 shots in the game. CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer was credited with three saves in the loss.
Four Rebels were named to the all-tournament team, highlighted by junior midfielder Erica Jensen, selected as the Tournament MVP. Also on the team from UNLV was Nero, Roberts and junior forward Jessica Destito.
UNLV returns to action on Friday, taking on Arizona State in Tempe in a 6 pm (PST) contest.
