Box Score

LAS VEGAS - UNLV won by the second-highest margin in school history on Monday afternoon as the Rebels women's soccer team overwhelmed Oakland 7-0 in the final game of the UNLV adidas Classic on Monday from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels outscored their opponents in the Classic 10-0, after handing UC Irvine a 3-0 defeat on Saturday, and improved to 2-1-1 on the year. In the first game of the day, New Mexico (3-1) claimed a 3-0 win over UC Irvine (0-4).

The seven goals, and the seven-goal win margin was the highest since the Rebels posted a 9-0 win over Nevada, Reno on Sept. 6, 2002. The scoring started in the 26th minute on a counter attack from the backfield. Brie Kuhne sent a pass up to Tanya Roberts, who found Haley Partridge racing down the right sideline. Partridge drove in and fed Armani Rice in front of the goal, and Rice tapped in the shot for a 1-0 UNLV lead. The Rebels added a second goal in the half in the 30th minute, on a score from Brianna Moore, who took a cross from Katie Carney and scored from right in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Rice scored her second goal of the game in the second half, as she won a battle for the ball in the box and slotted a shot to the far right post (59th minute). The lead increased to 4-0 in the 60th minute, off a Carney corner kick that was deflected out by Oakland (1-3) goalkeeper Kim Berbst right to Shannon Hughes, who buried the shot into the goal. Jessica Destito pushed the lead to 5-0 when she tapped in a cross from Niki Connolly in the 65th minute.

An own goal from Oakland accounted for the sixth score (78th minute) on a failed attempt to clear the ball out of the goalie box. The final score came off another corner kick. This time Hughes kick was perfectly placed toward the short post, and Connolly tapped it in for the score (90th minute).

Ciera Nero earned the shutout for the Rebels, posting six saves in goal. Berbet finished with six saves for the Golden Grizzles. UNLV held a 16-10 edge on shots, and 5-3 edge on corner kicks.

The first game was close for a half, but the Lobos scored three second half goals (Kristine Sweat, Asha Richardson, Markee Nobriga) to earn the 3-0 win.

UNLV will host its second tournament of the year this coming weekend, the UNLV Rebel Classic. The first game on Friday features Arizona State and Denver at 4:30 pm, while UNLV and UCF play at 7 pm. Sunday will see UCF and Arizona State face off at 11 am, while UNLV and Denver will play at 1:30 pm.
