LAS VEGAS - UNLV players turned in an impressive 7-4 overall singles record during Wednesday's first two rounds of the ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships being held at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
The Rebels also split two first-round doubles matches.
"It was a long first day, however, overall I was pleased with everyone's effort," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "There were some matches I felt we let slip away but we're in pretty good shape. It's a long week but we need to be ready to go on Thursday."
UNLV was led by its two seeded players. Junior Elliot Wronski, who is ranked 27th in the nation and seeded third in this tourney, enjoyed a bye and then rolled past Jake Tracy of Northern Arizona 6-1, 6-0. Wesley Burrows, seeded 12th, also earned a bye and then fought his way past Hugh McDonald of Idaho 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Senior David Campbell joined his teammates in the Round of 32 by winning his two matches, 6-1, 6-1 over New Mexico's Derek Lynch, and then 6-3, 6-1 over Jakob Asplund of Utah State.
In doubles, Wronski and Burrows, seeded fourth, had a bye while Luca Barlocchi and Campbell combined for an 8-6 win over Mikolaj Borkowski and Raydner Ramos from Montana.
No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 1-4 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
