The UNLV softball program is participating in the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's Champions Run For Life event on Saturday morning, Oct. 20, for the fourth straight year. The "Champions Run For Life" is part of The Fifth Annual Danny Gans Run For Children's Charities. The event is being held at Boca Park, located at 700 S. Rampart Boulevard.
The event features a one-mile run/walk at 7:45 am and will be followed by a 5K at 8:00 am that is broken down between divisions of competive, non-competitive, centipede, wheelchairs and strollers. At 9:45 am, the Champions Run For Life will take place. There will also be live entertainment, raffles and fun for the entire family.
The Champions Run For Life, with a carnival atmosphere, gives all involved the opportunity to recognize and individually honor the brave and valiant children who fight life-threatening illnesses daily. As they participate in the run or walk with the community mascots and others, we get to know them better as we salute them. Each child proudly holds the Olympic torch replica and receives a beautiful medal placed lovingly around their neck. In the true Olympic sense, it is a day of positive recognition and a show of love and triumph. The children are treated to many fun activities throughout the entire day. A special lap of silence is taken to remember those children who have lost the their battle in the past year.
The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's mission is to help families who have had a child diagnosed with a life threatening or critical illness such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia and other immunological diseases. The Foundation provides comfort and support while empowering and educating families and support staff. Working side-by-side with the patient's medical team the Foundation provides social emotional, educational and psychological support services to families of ALL children who are diagnosed with a life threatening or critical illness.
