Rebels Sweep Past Mt. SAC, Dixie State

Oct. 27, 2007

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels went 2-0 Saturday afternoon in their Round Robin Tournament held at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels defeated Mt. SAC, 11-2, in the first game and came back with a 6-1 win over Dixie State in the second.

In game one, the Rebels jumped out quickly with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to aid an 11-2 victory. Kendall Fearn put the Rebels on the board with a ground out off the pitcher's glove that was recovered by Mt. SAC's second baseman to score Alyssia De La Torre. Rosa Ordaz followed with a single to third to plate Brittany Bolinger. Laura Briones brought home two (Jaci Hull and Ordaz) with a triple to right center. Caitlyn Paus ended the Rebels' five-run first with a double off the fence in left to score Briones.

The five-run lead was all that UNLV's Stephanie Bregante needed in her five innings of work. Bregante blanked the Mounties' offense in her outing and only surrendered three hits. She struck out three and walked none, while facing 18.

After a scoreless second, the Rebels increased their lead to 6-0 with a run coming off of an error in the third. Kendall Fearn opened the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk to Ordaz. Fearn came around to score from second when a ball put in play by Briones was misplayed by the Mounties first baseman.

Hull knocked in two of her five RBI in the game in the fourth on a single through the right side to give UNLV an 8-0 lead. Ashli Holland and De La Torre were on third and second, respectively, when Hull got her first hit of the game.

Hull ended the Rebels scoring with a three-run home run over the fence in left center for an 8-0 advantage. Holland and De La Torre scored for the second time with Hull at the plate.

Mt. SAC scored its only runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single off of Ashley Arnett. Arnett entered the contest in the top of the sixth. The Mounties got a two-run single that allowed both runners to score from second and third. One of the runs was unearned.

In their second game of the day, the Rebels squared off against the Rebels. The Dixie State Rebels, that is. UNLV, playing as the visiting team, broke the game open with a four-spot in the first inning, en route to a 6-1 win.

In the first inning, Ordaz stepped up with the bases loaded and nailed a single to third to bring Bolinger in from third. Briones knocked a sacrifice fly to center to bring De La Torre in for a 2-0 lead. Paus followed with a single to right center to score Hull and Ordaz from third and second, respectively, after both moved up a base on a wild pitch.

Traci Odegard took to the circle for her first appearance as a Rebel with a four-run lead and kept Dixie State to an unearned run in five innings of work. Odegard retired five batters consecutively on two different occasions, while facing 19 batters. She allowed only three hits in her appearance.

DSU scored its lone run in the fifth when a ball hit to first was mishandled by Fearn. The ball rolled away into foul territory and allowed the runner to score from second.

UNLV added two runs in the sixth inning with help from a single by Stephanie Bean. Cheynah Farley, who was pinch-running for Briones at second, scored on Bean's hit to center. Brittany Meade was on first when the ball was hit and made her way to third, but an errant throw to the base went past the third baseman to allow her to score.

UNLV returns to action next weekend Nov. 2-3, in its second Round Robin Tournament at Eller Media Stadium.
