LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Katie Carney was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Women's Soccer First Team, the organization of sport information directors announced on Thursday. Carney earns academic district honors for the second straight year, as she was a second-team honoree last season, and is the first Rebel to be named to the all-district team more than once. By being named to the first team, Carney is now placed on the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Carney, a senior forward and native of Lake Forest, Calif., is leading the Rebels in scoring for the fourth straight season, and her current totals of six goals and six assists gives her 18 points, ranking her sixth in the Mountain West Conference. Carney is also tied for second in MWC games only with eight points (three goals and two assists).
She has a pair of game-winners this season, and is UNLV's all-time leader in that category with nine. Carney has also earned two weekly honors this season, as she was both MWC Player of the Week and a Soccer America Team of the Week selection after scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Cal State Fullerton in the season opener. Carney currently ranks third all-time at UNLV in career points with 62, is tied for third in career goals with 22, and tied for the all-time lead in assists with 18.
Carney has been an Academic All-MWC honoree her first three years at UNLV, and has made the dean's list every semester as well. She has also been the team's representative on UNLV's Student Athletic Advisory Committee the past three years. Carney carries a cumulative GPA of 3.67 with a major in broadcasting.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
