LAS VEGAS - UNLV ended the regular season the same way the season started, with Katie Carney and Alicia Lugo sweeping the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday. Carney was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Lugo earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, It was the second time this season both were named in the same week, as they earned weekly honors for the first week of the 2007 season as well on Sept. 3.
The two were the key factors in UNLV's 1-0, double-overtime victory over No. 24 BYU on Nov. 2, which gave the Rebels their second-ever MWC regular season championship. Carney, a senior forward from Lake Forest, Calif., scored the lone goal of the game in the 103rd minute, when she stole a pass from the Cougar goalkeeper and scored the golden goal for her seventh score of the season. It was also her 10th career game-winner, extending her own school record, and it gave her 20 points for the season, best on the team and sixth in the league. She is also second in MWC games with 10 points. Carney shared the award this week with Wyoming's Tamika Wilson.
Lugo, a sophomore from Lancaster, Calif., came up with 10 stops in goal while facing 16 shots from the Cougars to post her 10th shutout of the season, extending her school-record single-season shutout tally. For the season, she has a 0.59 goals against average and 92 saves.
