Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team (7-1) came up big in the third inning with seven runs to take command of its ball game against the UCF Golden Knights (3-4) on Friday night in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The Rebels added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to take the run-ruled contest 8-0.
After two scoreless innings of play, the Rebels offense scored seven runs on only three hits, while UCF's outfield pitched in with three errors. Brittany Freight began the frame with a fly to right and advanced to second when Ashley Van Ryn dropped the ball. Jaci Hull took first with a walk. Kelli Fangonilo moved the runners around the bases with a double to left to score Freight and put Hull on third. With runners in scoring position, Brittany Bolinger hit a single up the middle which Kacie Feaster let roll under her glove in center. Bolinger wound up advancing to third on the two-base error. Kendall Fearn put runners on the corners when she took first base on a walk. While Brittany Meade was at the plate a wild pitch was thrown to bring Bolinger home and put Fearn at second. Meade wound up walking. Caitlyn Paus knocked Fearn home with a single up the middle and moved Meade to third. Freight came up for the second time in the inning and hit a fly to left, which was dropped by Morgan Bullard. Freight took second on the error, while Meade and Paus closed out the scoring for UNLV.
The seven runs were more than enough for Shannon Crisp (1-0) who sailed through 4.0 innings of work. She picked up her first win of the season, as she allowed only one hit and struck out one.
Stephanie Bregante entered the game to pitch a scoreless fifth inning. She gave up one hit and struck out two.
UNLV came up to bat needing one run to end the game with the eight-run rule and did just that. The Rebels loaded the bases with help from a single by Meade, a walk to Bri Bernardi and an error by Amber Lamb at short stop on a Heather Slettvet grounder. Freight ended the game with a hard grounder up the middle.
Ashleigh Cole (1-2) suffered the loss for UCF. She tossed 3.0 innings of work and was touched for seven runs (two earned) on four hits. She struck out four and walked two. Lexi Grisham threw the final 1.0 inning of the game and allowed one run on two hits, while walking one.
