Rebels Plow Past Aggies Monday

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team (9-3) closed out game #68 of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with a 4-1 victory over Utah State (5-6) on Monday afternoon. The Rebels got single runs in four different innings, while the Aggies scored once in a dreary day at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring single up the by Kendall Fearn. Jaci Hull led off the inning with a walk and took second on a ground out by Brittany Bolinger.

The score was pushed to 2-0 on a ground out by Brittany Freight. Brittany Meade opened the inning with a single up the middle and moved around the bases on a bunt by Bri Bernardi and a walk to Caitlyn Paus.

After a scoreless third inning, the Rebels got their third run when Jenn Newman singled up the middle to score Freight came in from second base after she began the inning with a double down the right field line.

Fearn gave the Rebels a four-run cushion in the fifth with a one out home run to deep center.

USU plated its only run of the game in the sixth with help from two hits. Aubrie Stroman opened up the inning with a single to right and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Charity Weston then took over base-running duties for Stroman and moved to third on a wild pitch thrown by Stephanie Bregante (2-1). Emily Reilly brought Weston home with a single up the middle.

Bregante notched the win for UNLV with 5.0 innings of relief. She allowed two hits and only one run, while striking out three and walking two.

Stacey Ellingsworth suffered the loss for USU in 5.0 innings of work. She surrendered all four Rebel runs on nine hits. She struck out four and walked three.

Heather Slettvet got the start in the circle for UNLV and gave way to Bregante after 2.0 innings of work. She gave up three hits, struck out two and walked three.

The Rebels return to action on Feb. 22 in the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., at the Big League Dreams Sports Park. UNLV will play six games with the first against Virginia on the 22nd at 5:30 pm. The Rebels will also play Penn State, Cal Poly, Notre Dame, Mississippi and Maryland.
