Rebels Beat Terrapins By A Hair

Cathedral City, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (12-6) needed only one run to hold off the Maryland Terrapins, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City. The Rebels went 3-3 in its six games in the Palm Springs Classic.

UNLV struck early with the only run of the game in the bottom of the first. Jaci Hull led off the inning with a walk. After two outs were recorded and Hull still sitting on first, Sandy Nakamura would have been the third out of the inning, but reached first when Stacey Jennings offering went past her catcher to the backstop. Nakamura took first on the wild pitch, while Hull went to third. Jennings' followed that wild pitch with another to allow Hull to score.

Stephanie Bregante (4-2) made the one run stand, as she dealt the Rebels' third shutout of the season. In a complete-game effort, Bregante allowed only five hits and struck out nine Terrapin batters.

Jennings (2-4) suffered the loss for Maryland. She surrendered four hits and one run. She only struck out two and walked two.

Both teams had opportunities to add some run to the scoreboard, as both squads left five runners on the base paths in the game. Maryland stranded runners at third in the fourth and seventh innings. UNLV left a runner at third in the first, second and fifth frames.

Up next for the Rebels is the UNLV Invitational beginning on March 2-5. The Rebels welcome Southern Utah, DePaul, Fresno State, Cal, Delaware State and Nebraska. UNLV will play everyone except Nebraska. The Invitational kicks off at 9:00 am, on Friday with Fresno State vs. California. UNLV will play the final game of the night at 8:15 pm against Southern Utah.
