Final Stats
TAMPA, Fla. - The UNLV softball team (21-12) won its first game of the University of South Florida's Speedline Invitational, 6-1, over the Golden Flashes of Kent State (7-7). After waiting out Friday's rain delay and schedule alterations, the Rebels came out swinging with help from Kendall Fearn's third inning grand slam.
UNLV took a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the first on a Caitlyn Paus single up the middle. Paus came up to the plate with two out and two on. The hit allowed Brittany Meade, who reached on the Rebels' first hit of the game, to score from second.
The Rebels batted around in the third inning and added five more runs on four hits to push out to a 6-0 lead. Jaci Hull and Brittany Bolinger dropped back-to-back bunts in front of home plate to put runners on first and second. Meade came up and loaded the bases by getting hit by a pitch for the seventh time this season. Fearn promptly followed Meade's at-bat with an opposite field grand slam. Paus came up and took a base on balls before coming around to score the fifth run of the inning on a single up the middle by Kelli Fangonilo.
Christie Robinson (9-3) dealt six scoreless innings before Kent State was able to get its first runner on third base. Robinson went the distance and allowed only one run on six hits. She struck out six and walked none.
Kent State was able to score its only run of the game in the seventh off of two hits.
Brittney Robinson suffered the loss for the Golden Flashes. Robinson surrendered six runs on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked four.
UNLV returns to action on Saturday with a 2:30 pm EST contest against Long Island and then follow it up with a 5:00 pm EST affair with Rhode Island.
