The Lady Rebels have turned around their season in the past two weeks, as a three-game win streak has them in place to finish the Mountain West Conference regular season with an 8-8 record if they can pull off a road victory at Colorado State on Saturday. UNLV stood at 4-8 in league play after completing a three-game road trip, but began its recent win streak with a home upset of first-place Air Force, and followed that with a win over Air Force, and then another upset victory, this time over New Mexico in a 70-59 victory on Thursday night.
After going 10 straight games this year without reaching 70 points, the Lady Rebels have now scored 70 or more in the last three games. They will be hard pressed to continue that streak however, as during the win over New Mexico, they lost the services of sophomore center Shamela Hampton, who suffered an ACL tear in the second half. Hampton is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), and the Lady Rebels will have to get more production out of its backup post players (Latoya Hunt, Samantha Stickler) to help make up the difference. UNLV could also go with a smaller lineup, as guard Kameca Simmons is expected to take over the starting spot.
UNLV will be the sixth seed in next week's 2007 Mountain West Tournament, and will face off against the third seed, a team that will be determined after the completion of the regular season on Saturday. As the sixth seed last year, UNLV advanced to the semifinals for the third straight year.
