Washed Out

April 13, 2007

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV Rebels' Mountain West Conference softball games at New Mexico scheduled for Friday, April 13 have been postponed until Saturday, April 14 due to rain. Friday's first game began at 2:00 pm MST, but was halted in the bottom of the fifth with the Lobos leading 6-1.

The umpires decided to stop the game around 3:30 pm MST with two outs recorded in the bottom of the fifth. After nearly three hours of waiting, the decision to carry over the game until Saturday was made.

UNLV and UNM were scheduled to play a doubleheader today at Lobo Field. The second game of the doubleheader is now in question and a decision will be made at a later hour to determine if it will be played or not.

The Rebels were set to play single games in Fort Collins, Colo., against Colorado State on Saturday and Sunday. Due to travel arrangements, the UNLV-CSU contests will be played as a doubleheader on Sunday with an undetermined start time.

Prior to the delay and the eventual postponement, the frigid contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Lobos struck for three runs on four hits. Samantha Hughes got the offense going with a one-out single to short. Analise Rubalcava brought Hughes home with a double down the left field line off of Stephanie Bregante. Following a strike out, Lindsey Elcess cranked a two-run home run to left center, which prompted a pitching change. Christie Robinson entered and got the third out to end the frame.

The Rebels got one run back in the top of the fourth thanks to two Lobo errors. With one out, Brittany Meade hit a single down the right field line off of Kelly Ninemire. UNM's Ryanne Hodgins picked up the batted ball and threw wildly towards second base. Meade took advantage of Hodgins' errant throw and advanced to second base. Jenn Newman entered the game as a pinch-runner for Meade and proceeded to steal second on the first pitch. Newman wound up scoring on the play as Amy Ray's throw from second to Rubalcava covering third went in the dirt and rolled away.

New Mexico got the run back as they notched another three-spot in the fourth. Robinson got back-to-back ground outs to Meade at third before Hodgins hit a single up the middle. Hughes was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Rubalcava came up and delivered a first-pitch home run to left.

More information on the weekend's revised schedule will be posted as soon as it is finalized.
