Rebels To Host Aztecs, Youth Day Saturday

Leading Off: The UNLV Rebels jump back into Mountain West Conference play this weekend with a two-game set against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Rebels and Aztecs will play single games on Saturday, April 21 (6:00 pm) and Sunday, April 22 (2:00 pm). The two games will conclude the first half of league play for both teams, as UNLV sits at 6-1, while SDSU is 2-6.

Youth Day Set For Saturday: The UNLV softball program is hosting "Youth Day" (flyer) at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday, April 21. Kids 12 and under will be admitted free of charge for the Mountain West Conference contest between UNLV and San Diego State. The first 100 kids in attendance will be give a free t-shirt. a post-game clinic will take place following the finale of the 6:00 pm contest. For more information call 895-0697.

Dogs, Dingers & Derby: The UNLV softball program and the UNLV-CSUN Student Government are hosting a student tailgate for this Saturday's (April 21) Mountain West Conference game between UNLV and San Diego State. All student organizations and groups are invited for a chance to participate in the post-game home run derby contest. Students can try to hit home runs off of UNLV Head Coach Lonni Alameda following the conclusion of the 6:00 pm game for a chance to win their group/organization a pizza party at a future Rebel game. The tailgate begins at 5:30 with free hot dogs.

On Deck: Shortly after playing San Diego State, UNLV will head to Tempe, Ariz., to take on the #7/9 Arizona State Sun Devils in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 24 (3:00 pm). This will be the second straight season that the Rebels have traveled to Tempe, as ASU swept the two games played there in 2006.

Mountain West Conference Opponent: San Diego State Aztecs ~ Overall: 26-18. MWC: 2-6 ~ SDSU leads the all-time series 34-31, with the Aztecs winning the last game (6-0) on May 11, 2006 ~ The Aztecs come to Las Vegas after a 10-7 win over San Diego on Wednesday. Prior to the win, SDSU had won only two if its last eight.

New Mexico, UNLV Set Make Up Date For Cancelled Game: Due to a rain out, the second game of the UNLV-New Mexico doubleheader that was to have been played last Friday night (April 13) will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 28. The teams were originally scheduled to play single contests on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, against the Lobos.

The Rebels will play as the "home" team in the single on the 27th and the second game (approximately 2:00 pm) on the 28th. Due to MWC policy, the Lobos will be the "home" team for the noon contest on the 28th to make up for the rainout.

Southern Utah Recaps: The UNLV softball team split its doubleheader in Cedar City, Utah against Southern Utah on Wednesday afternoon. The Rebels took game one by a 12-11 margin, but dropped game two, 12-9. The games were played in cold and windy conditions at Kathryn Berg Field on SUU's campus.

It turned out being a good day for the hitters, but not so much for the hurlers. The teams combined for 42 runs and 50 hits. Of those 50 hits, seven went out of the park, two were triples and eight were doubles. UNLV hit at a .422 clip, while SUU hit slightly better at .424.

In game one, the score was tied 11-11 heading into the seventh inning. Rosa Ordaz put UNLV up for good with its 12th run of the game on a triple off of the fence in center field. Kendall Fearn scored on the hit after reaching on a base-on-balls.

In game two, UNLV chipped away at the SUU lead with four straight runs in the middle innings to even the game at 7-7. The four runs were scored via a sacrifice fly (third inning), two singles (fourth inning), a double and an errant throw on a steal attempt (fifth inning).

Unfortunately, the Thunderbirds answered the four UNLV runs with five of their own. SUU scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to push out to a 12-7 winning margin.

Southern Utah Hitting: In a non-conference doubleheader at Southern Utah, the Rebels hit at a .422 clip, while pounding out 27 hits. Eight of those hits went for extra bases with five doubles, one triple and two home runs. The team knocked in 18 RBI and scored 19 runs.

Seven Rebels hit above the .300 barrier in the two-game tilt with Brittany Meade leading with her .714 batting average. Brittany Freight (.571), Kelli Fangonilo (.556) and Brittany Bolinger (.500) all hit above .500. Rosa Ordaz (.375), Jaci Hull (.333) and Bri Bernardi (.333) hit in the .300s.

Meade smashed five hits around Berg Field, with two going for doubles (one a three-run shot) and one for a three-run home run. She had a slugging percentage of 1.429, while amassing an on-base percentage of .750.

Freight collected four hits (one double), two RBI and two runs. She slugged a .714 percentage and was on-base with a .571 percentage. She was 2-for-2 in the steal department, as well.

Fangonilo tied Meade for the most hits on the day with five (one double). She knocked in two RBI and scored three runs. She swiped two bases, also.

Bolinger had four hits (one double), two RBI and two runs scored. She was 3-for-3 on the base paths.
