LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Katie Carney picked up her second weekly honor of the week on Wednesday, as she was named to Soccer America's national Team of the Week. Carney is the fifth UNLV player ever to be named to SA's Team of the Week, and third in the last two seasons. It is her first career honor. Earlier this week, Carney was also named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
A forward from Lake Forest, Calif., Carney was involved in three of UNLV's four goals over the weekend to help the Rebels win both games of the UNLV adidas Classic. Against Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 31, a team that was receiving votes in the NSCAA Top-25 poll, Carney scored both goals of the game, the first off a free kick from 35 yards out less then two minutes in, and scored the Rebels' second goal in the 81st minute, on another long blast, this time from 30 yards out. On Sunday against Arizona State, her corner kick into the box was headed in by Amanda Forrester to give UNLV a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. UNLV would win 2-1 over the Sun Devils, who was ranked 11th regionally by Soccer Buzz. With the two goals and one assist, Carney finished the weekend with five points, which leads both the Rebels and the MWC, and she is now fourth all-time at UNLV in career points with 49.
The Rebels, will return to action this weekend in the UCF Invitational, beginning with a match against the host UCF Knights on Friday at 4:30 pm (PST) in Orlando, Fla.
