LAS VEGAS - The six Mountain West Conference head coaches have voted and have selected the BYU Cougars to win the 2008 regular season title. The Cougars received five first-place votes and 25 overall points, while the San Diego State Aztecs claimed the sixth first-place vote and 19 points for second place. UNLV placed third with 15 points, while Colorado State and New Mexico tied for fourth with 13 points each. Utah rounded out the six-team league with a sixth-place selection.
The Rebels come into 2008 under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Lonni Alameda, the reigning MWC Coach of the Year, and all-conference selections, Jaci Hull and Kendall Fearn. Overall, the Rebel return 12 letterwinners from the 2007 squad that went 37-27 and claimed second place in league play. Stephanie Bregante, a MWC Pitcher of the Week honoree, and Heather Slettvet return for their second season in the circle for the Rebels.
BYU, who went 43-20 in 2007 and claimed its third MWC regular season title, returns nine letterwinners. The Cougars will be led by Emi Snow, a 2007 All-America selection and all-conference performer.
San Diego State, 32-24 in 2007, will be led by Christina Ross, Lindsey Marquez and Brittany Knudson. All three student-athletes were chosen to the 2007 all-conference squad.
UNLV's season begins on Feb. 8, when the Rebels host the Sportco Spring Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 8-10). The Classic will feature Washington, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Loyola and Canada's National Team. UNLV will play twice on day one with a 2:30 pm contest against Texas Tech followed by a 4:45 pm tilt vs. Loyola.
The Rebels have 66 games slate for the 2008 season, including five overall home tournaments and two on the road. Outside of tournament and conference play, the team will play single road contests at UCLA and Northern Colorado and doubleheaders at Loyola Marymount, Arizona State and in-state rival, Nevada, Reno.
Season tickets are now available for purchase. They range in price from $55.00 (regular) and $40.00 (faculty/staff and senior).
The five tournaments that UNLV is hosting are priced at $10.00 per day for regulars, faculty/staff and seniors. Groups of 20 or more are discounted to $4.00 each.
Non-tournament home games are priced at $7.00 (regular) and $5.00 (faculty/staff and senior). Groups of 20 or more are discounted to $4.00 each.
