LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Luca Barlocchi has advanced to the quarterfinals of main draw singles after Thursday's action at the ITA Region 7 Men's Tennis Championships being held at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
Rebel senior standout Elliot Wronski, seeded second in the tournament, fell in his Round of 32 match to Corey Smith of Montana State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. However, Barlocchi downed Sascha Kiehne of Weber State, 6-1, 6-1. Also winning in the early round was Wesley Burrows, 6-2, 6-1, over Chandler Brass of New Mexico.
In the Round of 16 later in the day, Barlocchi advanced past his teammate, Burrows, by default, which does not count against either players' individual record. Barlocchi will face MSU's Smith in tomorrow's quarterfinals. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday and final round for Sunday.
Barlocchi also advanced in doubles as he and Wronski, seeded third, teamed up for an 8-4 win over Andrew Dobbs and Artem Kuznetsov of Idaho. There will be two rounds of doubles on Friday.
"It was another long day of tennis out here but there were some bright spots despite our top player going down," Hambrook said. "We have an entry still alive in the main draw of both singles and doubles so we're looking forward to Friday."
Members from 14 western teams are facing off here as individuals through Sunday in both singles and doubles. No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
