LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Luca Barlocchi has advanced to the semifinals of main draw singles after Friday's action at the ITA Region 7 Men's Tennis Championships being held at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
The Swiss import outlasted 18th-seeded Corey Smith of Montana State 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 to advance. He will now face Martin Zimmerman of the University of Denver in one of Saturday's semifinals. The final is slated for Sunday.
In doubles play, Barlocchi and partner Elliot Wronski, seeded third, won their first match of the day in the Round of 16 before being ousted by the event's fifth-seeded duo from BYU in the quarterfinals.
The Rebels do have another doubles team still alive, however, as Attila Toth and Wesley Burrows won twice on Friday in the consolation draw, including upsetting 10th-seeded Jakub Dybala of Pawel Turzasnki of Montana State 8-3.
Members from 14 western teams are facing off here as individuals through Sunday in both singles and doubles. No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
