AIR FORCE-UNLV GAME NOTES
Oct. 18, 2008
-UNLV's 29-28 defeat at the hands of Air Force marked the fifth time in six years that the Falcons downed the Rebels and improved the Academy's record in the series to 10-4 all-time.
-UNLV is now the only FBS team in the nation still perfect in red-zone scoring this season. After going two-for-two vs. Air Force, the Rebels improved to 20-20 with 17 touchdowns and three field goals. UNLV ranked last in the MWC in 2007 with only 15 TDs in 37 red-zone trips.
-UNLV had zero turnovers for the fourth time this season and leads the nation - along with Florida -- with only five turnovers (three fumbles and two interceptions) on the year.
-UNLV true freshman linebacker Beau Orth from Las Vegas made his first career start at a safety spot while junior linebacker Wiselet Rouzard made his first start of the season but third of his career.
-Casey Flair's acrobatic catch for a first down in the second quarter meant that the senior set the UNLV record for consecutive games with at least one reception with 42 (every game of his career), besting the 41 games posted by Earvin Johnson from 2001-04. The streak is the second-longest active in the nation, behind only Rice's Jarett Dillard's 43.
-Flair's four catches moved him past Earvin Johnson (2001-04) into second place on UNLV's career list with 184. The Alaska native needs just four more grabs to pass Damon Williams (1995-98) as the Rebels' all-time reception king.
-Junior Ryan Wolfe had eight catches on the night to cement his spot in fourth place all-time at the school with 170 receptions after just 31 games played.
-RB C.J. Cox's five-yard scoring run in the second quarter marked the true freshman's first career touchdown at UNLV. He finished the game with a career-high 60 yards rushing on 13 carries.
-Phillip Payne caught his seventh touchdown of the season in the second quarter. The Las Vegas native leads the nation with scoring catches among freshmen. He is also just one away from the UNLV record of touchdown receptions by a freshman set by Lenny Ware in 1998.
-Payne went for a career-high 124 yards and six receptions. It was only the third time this season that a UNLV player turned in a 100-yard game (Ryan Wolfe with two).
-The 28-yard scoring pass by Omar Clayton gave him 15, which is the most by a Rebel quarterback in an entire season since Jon Denton tossed 18 in 1997. Clayton then found Casey Flair for a nine-yarder in the third quarter to give his team a 21-20 lead. With 16 on the year, Clayton now ranks ninth at the school for a single season.
-Frank Summers' 45-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter gave "The Tank" 16 touchdowns in just 19 games played at UNLV (11 rushing and five receiving).
-Junior LB Jason Beauchamp turned in 13 total tackles. He came into the game leading the MWC and ranked sixth in the nation with 10.8 per game. The San Diego native has now reached double figures in takedowns in three straight games.
