FORT WORTH, Texas - In a key matchup in Mountain West Conference women's soccer, UNLV (11-5-2) and TCU (11-3-2) each scored once in the second half for a 1-1 double-overtime on Friday night. With the outcome, both teams now move past idle Utah into a tie for second place in the conference with 10 points off identical 3-2-1 records.
After being held to just one shot in the opening half, the visiting Rebels scored the first goal of the game in the 57th minute, when Niki Connolly buried the ball in the back of the net off an assist from Ashleigh Shoughro.
UNLV was then five minutes away from victory before the Horned Frogs came up with a tying goal, a Jackie Torda header off a Kaylie Garcia pass in the 85th minute. Shoughro tried to win the game in regulation after getting off two shots in the final 50 seconds, but couldn't get past the TCU goalie and the game would go into overtime.
TCU was in control for the opening of the first overtime, getting off five shots, but Rebel goalkeeper Alicia Lugo came up big with three saves. UNLV then had another great chance in the final minute, when Dani Morin's shot with 20 seconds left hit the post, and Brianna Moore's follow shot was saved by TCU's Kelsey Walters.
Defense was big in the second overtime, as the teams combined for just four shots, and none in the final three minutes.
TCU held a 29-14 edge on shots, and 7-1 on corner kicks. Lugo posted eight saves in goal for UNLV, while Walters finished with seven.
The Rebels will finish the regular season next Friday, Oct. 31, when they host New Mexico on UNLV's Senior Day. The game, which will be nationally televised on the Mtn., will kick off at 3:30 pm from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
