UNLV men's soccer weekly notes

The UNLV men's soccer team is back at home this weekend after starting conference play last week. The Rebels will play the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday night at 7 pm, and then face San Jose State on Sunday at 1 pm, with both games at Peter Johann Field.

The Rebels faced a tough road test starting conference play as they traveled to Colorado last weekend. The Rebels loss to Air Force was a heartbreaker as they dropped the conference opener 1-0. Next, the team faced the Pioneers of Denver, and UNLV took another tough 1-0 loss to end their road trip. The Rebels outshot Denver 20-15 but could not a shot to go in.

UNLV senior goalkeeper Hawk Mummey played well throughout both games only allowing one goal per game. Mummey had six saves throughout the weekend. Mummey has a total of 41 saves on the season. Senior Lamar Neagle gave UNLV it's only hope for a goal in the final minute of the conference opener, but the ball went just a little to high. Neagle still holds the lead in the MPSF for goals this season.

Sacramento State is coming off a 1-0 win in their conference opener against San Jose State. The Hornets were led by junior Zach Tuss scored the game-winning goal and the first goal of this career. Also Sacramento State's goalkeeper junior Ryan Kenny recorded his first shutout of the year. UNLV and Sacramento State split their meetings last year. The Hornets and Rebels overall record against one another is 3-10.

San Jose State faced a tough loss against Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans fought hard but just could not come up with a goal. The Spartans dropped its conference opener 1-0 to the Hornets. Senior Hiroki Akiyama attempted four shots on goal in the game. Akiyama has taken 18 shots this season, and has two goals. The Spartans will be a challenge for UNLV, as they won both matches last season. UNLV has the overall edge on the Spartans at 16-11-3.
