LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team, ranked 18th in the country in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, shot a final-round 6-under-par 282 on Wednesday to finish tied for third at the 8th Annual Turtle Bay Intercollegiate played at the Turtle Bay Resort Golf Course in Kahuku, Hawaii. The first and third rounds were played on the George Fazio Course (par 72, 6535 yards) and the second round was played on the Palmer Course (par 72, 7218 yards).
Texas fired a final-round 15-under 273 to win the tournament's team title by three shots at 21-under 843. San Diego State finished second at 18-under 846, while UNLV and Texas-Arlington both tied for third at 14-under 850, seven shots back. Ohio State rounded out the top five at the 19-team event with a 54-hole total of 12-under 852.
Ohio State's Vaughn Snyder shot a final-round 5-under 67 to win medalist honors by one shot at 11-under 205. Texas-Arlington's Bobby Mesa finished in second after a 10-under 62 on Wednesday. Mesa finished the tournament at 10-under 206. UNLV junior Eddie Olson paced the Rebels, finishing tied for 10th at 5-under 211. He shot a final-round 1-under 71.
Other Rebels: freshmen Derek Ernst tied for 18th at 3-under 213 after a final-round 1-under 71, junior Brett Kanda finished tied for 34th at even-par 216 after a final-round 3-over 75, freshman Colby Smith finished tied for 42nd at 2-over 218 after a final-round even-par 72, sophomore Ji Moon, who is competing as an individual, also tied for 42nd after a final-round 5-under 67, and sophomore Jeremiah Wooding finished tied for 49th at 3-over 219 after a final-round 4-under 68.
The Turtle Bay Intercollegiate concluded the fall season for the Rebels. The spring season will start for UNLV with the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 2-3.
