LAS VEGAS - Sophomore forward Ashleigh Shoughro was selected to the All-Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer First Team, while two more Rebels were second team selections, it was announced on Tuesday night at the pre-championship banquet on the UNLV campus.
Shoughro, a sophomore forward and Las Vegas native who played her freshman year at San Diego, became UNLV's all-time season points leader this year after scoring 28 points, which is second best in the conference. Her 13 points in conference play was top in the league was well.
Senior defender Brie Kuhne, native of San Diego, Calif., was selected to the second team after being named to the first team the previous two years. She was part of a Rebel defense that posted a 1.03 GAA during the year and recorded six shutouts, while she also finished the year with a career-best six points, including the first game-winner of her career in a 2-1 win over No. 24 Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Junior goalkeeper Alicia Lugo earned the first all-conference honors of her career as she was named to the second team. Lugo led the MWC in saves with 4.5 per game, while also recording a 0.94 GAA in 1,635 minutes of action.
BYU posted a near sweep of the major awards, as senior Kate Larkin was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while junior Andrea Willis was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. BYU's Jennifer Rockwood was also named the MWC Coach of the Year. The final award went to TCU's Jordan Calhoun for Freshman of the Year.
The 2008 MWC Tournament will begin on Wednesday in Las Vegas. UNLV will face off against New Mexico in the second game of the first round at 3 pm from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
