LAS VEGAS - UNLV held Utah State to just six points during a 10-minute span in the second half, and also hit four consecutive three-pointers during that stretch to open up a 17-point lead on the way to a 65-47 victory over the Aggies in women's collegiate basketball action on Tuesday night from the Cox Pavilion. With their second straight win, the Lady Rebels improved to 7-5 on the year, while Utah State dropped to 6-6.
The Aggies scored the first four points of the contest, and a layup from Danyelle Snelgro gave Utah State a 12-11 lead five minutes into the game. A layup from Brittany Halberg started a 14-3 run for the Lady Rebels over a 7:02 span, and they would not trail again. Latoya Hunt's free throw capped the run at 8:01, making the score 25-15, and UNLV would take a 30-22 lead into halftime.
After Nicole Johnson hit a jumper for the Aggies to bring them within six, India Chaney answered back with a jumper to start a 17-6 run for UNLV. The score was 34-28 in favor of the Lady Rebels when they scored nine unanswered points off three treys from three separate players to put the game away. Utah State would make a run late, cutting the lead to 11 twice, the last with four minutes to play, but back-to-back layups from Chaney pushed the edge back to 15. UNLV took its largest lead, 65-45, on Brittany Halberg's jumper with 17 seconds to play.
Chaney led all scores with a career-high tying 16 points, while Jamie Smith scored 14 points and Erica Helms 13. Shamela Hampton grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Rebels, who would hold a 49-33 edge on the boards. For the game, UNLV shot 41.5% (22-of-53), was 5-of-16 for 31.3% from three-point range, and made 16-of-24 at the line for 66.7%.
Snelgro paced the Aggies with 14 points, and was followed by Ana Pares with 11 and Lydia Whitehead with 10. Utah State shot 30.8% (20-of-65) from the floor, made just 4-of-20 from three-point land, and was 3-of-5 at the line for 60%.
UNLV returns to action on Friday, Jan, 2, when it will play its final game before starting Mountain West Conference play by hosting Fresno State in a 7 pm contest from the Cox Pavilion.
