Feb. 29, 2008

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Day one at the Mountain West Indoor Championship may have ended with the UNLV track and field team being tied for eighth place overall but it was a strong first step.

The first full day of competition was a day in which several student-athletes had standout performances. Monique Humphries beat her school record by throwing 59'-8" for a second place finish. Kenya Polee beat her personal record jumping 18'-10" in the long jump.

The sprinters came out strong with someone managing to qualify for one of the final races tomorrow. Lekeisha Lawson had a strong qualifying performance coming in third place in the 60 meter with a time of 7.54. Lauren Johnson also had a stand out performance on the first day of competition as she qualified in both the 60 with a time of 7.66 and 200 with a time of 24.88 which beat her personal records in both. Britney Bullocks qualified for the 400 with a time of 58.72. The distance medley team which included Jennifer Shearer, Ashley Silva and Charlotte Browning came in 7th. Also Browning easily qualified for the mile run.

Coach Yvonne Scott-Williams was adamant in making sure the team knew that the rankings on the piece of paper don't mean anything.

"It's all about who shows up to compete on that day and once you step to the start line all of that goes out the window," says Scott-Williams.

The current standings are Colorado State (56 points), San Diego State (44 points), followed by TCU (29), Wyoming (24), BYU (23),New Mexico (20), Utah (14), UNLV (12) and Air Force (12).
