Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (13-7-1) split its two games at the Eller Media Stadium Classic Saturday evening. UNLV lost to the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (12-4) by a 5-2 margin, but rebounded with a 3-2 victory over the California Golden Bears (13-8).
In game one, Hawai'i broke a 2-2 tie in the second with a run in the second and wound on keeping the Rebels scoreless the remainder of the game.
The Rainbow Wahine struck for two runs in the first off of two hits and a UNLV error. Kaulana Gould began the offensive with a double and took third on Audrey Andrade's single offered by Stephanie Bregante (6-5). Following a wild pitch and an error, Gould scored the first run of the game, while Andrade followed on Brandi Peiler's single.
The Rebels countered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Rosa Ordaz. Jaci Hull scored on the homer after hitting a double of her own.
Hawai'i wound up taking the lead for good when Richie-Ann Titcomb scored from second on a single by Gould. Titcomb reached on a two-out single and advanced to second on a walk issued to Clare Warwick.
UH added insurance runs in the third and seventh to take the game by a 5-2 score.
Bregante took the loss in tossing the complete game. She struck out a career-high 13 batters in the contest.
Jessica Morton (1-0) notched her first win as a Rainbow Wahine. Morton went the distance and only allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out seven.
In game two, UNLV scored three runs in the bottom of the third and held on for a 3-2 win against Cal.
The Golden Bears took a brief 1-0 lead in the third on a groundout by Erika Racklin. Shannon Houston, who had reached on a throwing error off of a sacrifice bunt attempt, scored from third on the play.
The Rebels countered with their three runs with help from a two-run single by Laura Briones and a one-run single by Stephanie Bean. Alyssia De La Torre began the inning with a double down the left-field line and took third on a wild pitch. Brittany Bolinger joined De La Torre on the base paths via a walk issued by Melissa Drewrey (8-4). Bolinger moved into scoring position after stealing second. Briones stepped up and delivered a single to left to plate the runners before continuing on to second. Bean duplicated Briones' effort with her own RBI-single.
Cal pulled within one in the fourth on a sacrifice fly hit by Katie Vickers. Bernice Masaniai led off with a walk and took second when Sanoe Kekahuna singled. Savannah Hensley pinch-ran for Masaniai and moved up a base with help from a wild pitch thrown by Heather Slettvet (1-0). Vickers then brought home Hensley.
Bregante was summoned from the bullpen to close out the final 2.2 innings. She struck out three and gave up only one hit, while picking up her second save of 2008.
Drewrey took the loss in 6.0 innings of work. She struck out 11, but allowed three runs on six hits.
The win over Cal is the first for UNLV since a 6-2 victory on Feb. 19, 1999, in Las Vegas. The Golden Bears had previously won the eight previous.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday in the finale of the Classic at 1:30 pm vs. Long Beach State.
