Rebels Pull Wool Over Wolverines Eyes

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels improved to 17-12-1 with their sweep of Friday's contests against the Utah Valley Wolverines (4-14) at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels won the first contest by an 11-1 margin in five innings and took the second game by a 4-1 score.

In game one, the Wolverines jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but watched the Rebels rally for 11 runs over five innings.

UVU managed to collect two of its four hits in the first inning en route to scoring its only run of the game. Meghan Woodworth wound up scoring the game's first run after being hit by a Stephanie Bregante offering. Woodworth took second on a single by Cherylyn McGraw and came around to score on a single by Jessica Anderson.

The Rebels rebounded for six runs off of six hits in the bottom of the first to take control of the game. Brittany Bolinger led off the game with a walk issued by Alli Bramwell and moved up to second on a bunt single by Jaci Hull. Rosa Ordaz evened up the game at 1-1 with a double to left to plate Bolinger. Laura Briones cleared the bases with a three-run home run to put the Rebels up for good. Stephanie Bean kept the inning going with a single and took third when a sacrifice bunt attempt by Brittany Meade was misplayed. Ashli Holland then laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt to score Bean to close out the scoring.

UNLV tacked on two more runs in the second off of a single by Meade and an error hit by Caitlyn Paus.

Bolinger opened up the third with a double and later crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Ordaz.

The Rebels tacked on two more runs in the fourth with help from a triple by Sandy Nakamura to score Bean, while Holland brought Nakamura home on a sacrifice fly.

Bregante improved to 9-7 on the year with 3.0 innings of work. She gave up one run on three hits, while striking out five.

Ashley Arnett closed out the game for UNLV with two scoreless innings of relief.

Bramwell drops to 4-4 on the year, as she only lasted 1.0 inning. She allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits.

In game two, the Rebels broke open a scoreless contest in the top of the fifth with a grand slam off the bat of Bolinger. Bean opened up the frame with a double and was joined on the base paths by Paus, who was walked. Holland loaded the bags for Bolinger's heroics with a single of her own. Bolinger took Heidi Stocks pitch to deep left for her third home run of the year.

Stocks got one run back by recording a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Heather Slettvet pulled her overall record even at 2-2 with the complete-game win. Slettvet fanned 12 Wolverines, which tied a career-high, while walking none. She struck out the side in the first and fourth innings, while recording nine of the first 12 outs via the strike out. She surrendered six hits and was able to hold UVU at bay, as she forced them to strand seven base runners throughout the game.

Stocks suffered the defeat and fell to 0-5. She struck out five, but allowed four runs on seven hits.

Up next for UNLV is a 3:00 pm tilt with Utah Valley on Saturday, March 15.
