Ragin' Cajuns Too Hot For Rebels

Final Stats

Fullerton, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels (19-17-1) were no-hit by Louisiana's Ashley Brignac Friday afternoon in UL's 10-0, five-inning win at the Judi Garman Classic. The game was stopped after five completed innings due to the run-rule.

Louisiana got its offense going with two runs in the second inning after leaving the bases loaded in the first. Karli Hubbard and Vallie Gaspard led off the second with back-to-back infield singles and then moved into scoring position on a groundout. Holly Tankersley brought Hubbard home for the game's first run with a single through the left side, while Vanessa Soto plated Gaspard with a single through the right side.

The Ragin' Cajuns added two more runs in the second inning with help from an errant throw by Laura Briones in a pick-off attempt and an infield single. Jessica DuPont began the inning with a walk and was then pinch run for by Shari Sigur. Karli Hubbard then collected an infield single to put runners at first and second before a ground out advanced both runners 60-feet. Briones tried to pick-off Sigur at third, but the ball went into foul territory in left and allowed Sigur to score. Hubbard wound up scoring on a single by Katie Smith.

UL added six runs in the fourth inning to up its lead to 10-0. The inning was highlighted by two-run home run by Gabrielle Bridges.

Brignac improved to 13-4 with the complete-game victory with 10 strikeouts. Brignac's only faults on the day were hitting Brittany Bolinger twice and walking Laura Briones. In all, she only faced three batters over the minimum.

Coincidentally, the last time UNLV was no hit was at the "Garman" nearly two years to the date. On March 16, 2006, Arizona no-hit the Rebels in a 7-0 contest.

Heather Slettvet dropped to 2-5 on the year in 4.0 innings of work. Slettvet 10 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Traci Odegard pitched the final frame for UNLV and picked up one strikeout to one walk.

The Rebels return to action Friday night against DePaul at 8:00 pm.
