Final Stats

PROVO, Utah - The UNLV Rebels (23-34-1 overall, 3-11 Mountain West Conference) dropped another heartbreaker Saturday afternoon at Miller Field to the BYU Cougars (35-16, 10-4) by a 7-6 margin. Today's game was the fourth straight loss that the Rebels have been handed by one run and fifth consecutive by the same tally.

After UNLV tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Jaci Hull, Monica Gonazeles stepped up to the plate with runners on the corners and dropped a bloop single down the line in left to plate the winning run for BYU. Emi Willing led off the inning on a controversial call at first that was overturned and ruled an error. Willing took second on a sacrifice bunt, third on Kristin Delahoussaye's single through the right-side and scored on Gonzales' single.

After Christina Gwyn-Trice struck out the first two Rebel batters, UNLV strung together three hits to score two in the first inning. Rosa Ordaz led off the offensive with a single to left-center field, while Ashli Holland hit a double to right field. With runners in scoring position, Brittany Meade delivered a two-run single to right-center field to put the Rebels up 2-0.

BYU managed to get one run back in the bottom of the first on a double by Dani Snow off of Traci Odegard. Delahoussaye led off the inning with walk and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. Amanda Vance moved Delahoussaye to third on a single through the left side, while Snow followed with her two-bagger to left. Ashley Arnett relieved Odegard and recorded the final two outs to end the inning.

The game pulled even at 2-2 when BYU got a double by Delahoussaye in the bottom of the second to score Stephanie Hopkins from first. Hopkins scored from first after initially reaching on a single to short.

Stephanie Bregante took the ball from Arnett in the third and pitched 1.1 innings before having to leave due to injury. Bregante was hit by a line-drive hit by Stephanie Hopkins. Bregante was carted off the field and relieved by Heather Slettvet, who recorded the final two outs to end the fourth.

UNLV finally got to Gwyn-Trice in the fifth inning after she had recorded 11 straight outs beginning with a strikeout to close the first. Cheynah Farley led off the frame with a walk before taking second on a wild pitch. Alyssia De La Torre, who entered the game in the bottom of the fourth, nailed a triple to right field to score Farley and break the 2-2 tie. Brittany Bolinger laid down an attempted sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Gwyn-Trice, but Delahoussaye didn't touch first when she received the ball. Bolinger deliberately got caught in a rundown to allow De La Torre to score to give the Rebels a 4-2 lead.

The Cougars got one run back in the fifth on an RBI-single by Angeline Quiocho. Snow led off the inning with a single and then was pinch-run for by Whitney Nix, who then took second on a wild pitch. Quiocho then hit a hard grounder through the right-side to plate Nix. BYU managed to load the bases after that, but Slettvet got the final two outs to end the threat.

Quicho gave BYU its first lead of the game when she took Slettvet's offering to deep left-center field in the sixth. The Cougars' opportunity began with back-to-back walks issued to Amanda Vance and Snow.

Gwyn-Trice earned the win for BYU and improved to 16-6 on the year. She allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits. She struck out 14 and walked two.

Slettvet (3-13) was handed the loss in 3.0 innings of relief work. She surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits. She struck out two and walked two.
