Final Stats
SAN DIEGO - In what started out as a pitchers' dual the game became offensive in the fifth inning. Through the first four frames the teams combined for only three hits with UNLV owning two of them. The fifth inning witnessed two hits by both teams and three total runs. Ultimately, #19 San Diego State (29-10, 2-0 Mountain West) took the game with a 2-0 decision over UNLV (20-22-1, 0-2 MWC).
Ashli Holland broke up the scoreless affair with a one-out solo home run to give UNLV a short-lived 1-0 lead in the fifth.
San Diego State countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Following two singles and a walk to load the bases, Janae Portugal evened up the score with a fielder's choice hit to Jaci Hull. Hull's throw to the plate was late and allowed Stephanie Quichocho-Rosario to score from third. A sacrifice bunt by Jeniffer Wisneski plated Katy Erickson with the go-ahead run.
Christina Ross, who had her 30.0-scoreless inning streak snapped with Holland's home run, improved to 17-8 on the year. Ross struck out seven, but surrendered four hits and one walk in the complete-game effort.
Heather Slettvet dropped to 2-7 on the year with the loss. Slettvet allowed two runs on three hits. She fanned four to counter one walk.
The Rebels are back in action next Thursday, April 10, when the BYU Cougars come to town for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
