On Deck: Following the trip this weekend's games vs. UNM and CSU, the Rebels will close out the season with a two-game set against the nationally-ranked San Diego State Aztecs on May 9-10. The games vs. SDSU will also close out the Mountain West Conference regular season.
On May 10, UNLV softball will celebrate the careers of its five seniors that will be playing their final games as Rebels. Caitlyn Paus, Rosa Ordaz and Sandy Nakamura have been members of the program since 2005. Heather Slettvet came to be a Rebel in 2007, while Stephanie Bean is playing her only year at UNLV after previously playing three years at Portland State.
Week 13.1 Recap: UNLV jumped out of conference for the final time with a midweek doubleheader at Nevada, Reno on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolf Pack got the best of the Rebels with a sweep of the twin bill by scores of 9-1 and 10-9. Game one was ended in the fifth inning due to the run-rule being enacted, while the second game saw UNR rally from a nine-run deficit to turn the tables on the Rebels.
In game one, UNR jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with three-run tallies in the first and second innings en route to its 9-1 win. UNLV scored its lone run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Ashli Holland. The Wolf Pack managed to score two more in the bottom of the fourth and ended the game with one more score in the fifth. Heather Slettvet was stuck with the loss in 1.2 innings of a start.
In game two, UNLV owned the first half of the game with nine runs, while UNR waited until the end of the game for their offensive output. The Rebels struck for seven runs in the second inning off of eight hits, including a grand slam by Holland. After picking up one of the three lone RBI in the second, Brittany Bolinger picked up a couple more with a two-run home run in the third to put UNLV up 9-0. The Wolf Pack got a two-run homer of its own in the fourth to stave off the run-rule. UNR strung together an eight-run, seven-hit inning to take control of the game. Traci Odegard was handed the loss in 6.0 combined innings of work.
Whammy!: With six games remaining in the 2008 regular season, UNLV sits at 41 home runs on the year. With two home runs notched in the doubleheader at Nevada, Reno (April 30), UNLV has hit the 40+ mark for the fourth straight season.
Prior to Lonni Alameda taking over the reigns at UNLV, the program had only one season of 39 or more home runs. That lone squad to achieve the feat was the 1995 Women's College World Series team.
In the three previous years, the Rebels have hit a program-best 50 in 2005 and followed that up with 44 in 2006 and 45 in 2007.
