Sept. 21, 2008

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - UNLV senior forward Lamar Neagle scored back-to-back goals just 29 seconds apart with less then six minutes left in the game to give the Rebels a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's in the final game of the BMW/Nike Classic on Sunday afternoon on the San Francisco campus. The win improved UNLV to 5-2-1 on the season, and gave them runner-up honors in the classic, while the host USF Dons won the tournament title thanks to goal differential, after tying UNLV 1-1 on Friday night and defeating Penn State 2-0 on Sunday. St. Mary's dropped to 1-5-2 on the season.

After a slow start to the game, in which a total of five shots were taken between both teams in the first half, the Gaels got on the scoreboard in the 78th minute. Yousef Samy headed in a shot to the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead for the Gaels, with Erik Rivas assisting on the score. UNLV tied the game in the 84th minute (83:33) on Neagle's first goal, as he took a pass from Ben Haugland and sent a shot to the left side of the net.

Just 29 seconds later came Neagle's next goal, his third of the weekend and fifth in the last four games. This time it was off a long Austin Horner throw in that Neagle went up and headed in to the right post, giving UNLV a 2-1 lead in the 85th minute (84:04).

UNLV finished the game with an 11-5 edge on shots. Hawk Mummey made three saves in goal for the Rebels, while Jason Badger posted four saves for the Gaels. Neagle was named to the all-tournament team, along with defender John Crawley.

The Rebels will now break for two weeks before beginning MPSF conference play, as their league opener will be at Air Force on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 pm.
