LONG BEACH, Calif. - UNLV junior midfielder converted a penalty kick into the game's only score to give the Rebels a 1-0 win at regionally ranked Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon in women's collegiate soccer action from George Allen Field. The win improved UNLV's record to 4-1-1, while the 49ers were handed their first loss of the year (3-1-1).
Long Beach State held a decisive edge on shots during the game, 17-6, but the only three were shots on goal, as the Rebel defense did not give many open looks at all to post the shutout. With the game still scoreless late in the second half, the Rebels drew a penalty kick when senior forward Haley Partridge was knocked down inside the box in the 77th minute. Attempting the first PK of her career, Hughes converted the shot to put the Rebels up 1-0.
Rebel goalkeeper Alicia Lugo recorded three saves to earn her third shutout of the season, while Breanna Truelove was credited with one save for the 49ers.
UNLV will play on the road for the third weekend this season in its next action, as the Rebels will take on Fairleigh Dickson on Friday and Milwaukee on Sunday in the UNM Nike Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
