LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's track and field team is ready to start the season as the Rebels head off to compete Saturday in the 2009 Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The Rebels will take 23 student-athletes to the Lumberjack Invitational, which is the first indoor event this season. The meet will begin at 8:30 AM (PST) at the Northern Arizona University J L Walkup Skydome.
"For our first official indoor competition we expect to get a lot of good performances from our team," said head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams. "They are all excited and anxious to get on the track to see what they are capable of doing. This is still early season for us so we don't expect to be at our best but it will be a great indication of what is to come and what needs to be done for the rest of the season."
The Rebels look strong in the 60 and 200 meters with senior Lekeisha Lawson and juniors Chauncey David-Jacobs and Shahnel Woodley. Senior Jennifer Shearer should be competitive for UNLV in the 3000 meters, and she will be the only runner in the event for the Rebels.
The women's long jump will include juniors Talyah Polee and Meia Tezeno, and freshman Deja Edwards. On the field senior Olivia Raya, sophomore LaShante Ellison and freshman Amanda Bingson should score points in the weight throw.
UNLV will compete against approximately 13 teams that include host Northern Arizona, University of Arizona and UCLA. The meet will open with the women's long jump and end the day off with 4x400 meter relay.
The Rebels will compete in two other indoor meets, including coming back to Flagstaff and then heading off to Seattle, Wash., to round up the indoor schedule.
