LAS VEGAS - In a tight hard-fought contest, BYU scored the only goal of the game less then five minutes into the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory over UNLV in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss for UNLV, its second in league play by a 1-0 score, dropped its record to 4-6-4, 0-2 in the MWC. The Cougars meanwhile improved to 11-2-2, 2-0-1 in the conference.

The winning score for BYU came in the fifth minute after the Rebels were whistled for a foul on their side of the field, setting up a free kick about 35 yards away from the goal on the right side. Andrea Willis sent the free kick high across the box to the left side of the goal where it dropped down past the Rebel backline to Kassidy Shumway, who quickly shot the ball into the net for a 1-0 BYU advantage.

That lead would hold up the entire game, though the Rebels did come up with several strong scoring changes. In the first half, Ashleigh Shoughro sent a through pass in-between two BYU defenders to Collete Jepson, setting up a one-on-one with the goalie, but McKinzie Olson was able to make the save on Jepson's shot in the 31st minute.

UNLV thought it had tied up the game in the 71st minute when Amanda Forrester received a cross in the box and redirected the shot past Olson into the back of the net. However, the goal was disallowed after UNLV was whistled for offsides.

Alicia Lugo finished with three saves in the net for UNLV, while Olson recorded two to earn a shutout. The Rebels held a slight advantage on corner kicks, 6-5, while shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of BYU.

UNLV will now take to the road for its next two games, at Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 4 pm and at Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 11 am.
