Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Junior midfielder Stephen Sifuentes scored once in each half to lead UNLV to a 4-2 victory over Houston Baptist in men's collegiate soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. With the win in their final non-conference game of the season, the Rebels improved to 6-2-2, its best 10-game start since beginning the 1988 season with a 6-2-2 mark as well. Houston Baptist dropped to 4-8 on the year.

UNLV dominated the action on the offensive side of the field, holding a 17-6 edge on shots, and 7-2 on shots on goal. Sifuentes started the scoring in the 26th minute when he dribbled down the right side, through several defenders, and unleashed a shot from the middle of the box to the far right post for the score.

UNLV would go up 2-0 in the 35th minute on a score by Nick Marshall, his team-leading seventh of the year. Goalkeeper Roland Swanson and Zach Kupfer were each credited with assists on the score, as Swanson drop-kicked the ball past midfield, where it was headed by Kupfer towards the HBU goal. Marshall outran the defenders to the ball and easily scored from 10 yards out for the score.

Roberto Farfan posted his first career goal in the 37th minute to put UNLV up 3-0 when he tracked down a loose ball in the box and blasted a shot through several defenders into the back of the net. That would be the last score for the next 40 minutes, until the 77th minute when the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. Dan Dwyer converted the kick for HBU to close the lead to 3-1.

Sifuentes would seal the win for UNLV in the 88th minute when he blasted a shot at HBU goalkeeper Chris Dodd from 20 yards out. Dodd made a stop on the ball but could not collect it in, and Sifuentes raced in and kicked in another shot from three yards out for the goal, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Rebels. Kyle Oehring scored the final goal of the game in the 89th minute when he headed in Lorne Cameron's corner kick, bringing the Huskies within 4-2.

UNLV will have its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference opener this Friday, Oct. 16, when it hosts new league-member Cal State Bakersfield at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
