LAS VEGAS - UNLV nearly rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit, but TCU's Jackie Torda scored seven minutes into the first overtime to allow the Horned Frogs to escape with a 3-2 victory in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. In a key contest for both teams, the Rebels dropped to 1-3-1 in league play (5-7-5 overall), while TCU moved to 2-4 in the conference, and 9-8 overall.
The Rebels were aggressive on offense all night long, and controlled the ball for the majority of the first half while holding an 8-4 edge on shots. It was TCU that came up with the first goal however when Torda blasted a long shot from 35 yards out that rocketed to the top right corner of the goal in the 36th minute. The Horned Frogs increased the lead to 2-0 less then a minute into the second half. Michelle Nguyen took a shot from the left side that bounced off the crossbar to Kaitlyn Shelledy, who quickly placed the ball back into the goal from the right side of the box in the 46th minute.
UNLV would respond quickly with a goal in the 49th minute, Following a foul on TCU, Shannon Hughes sent a long high free kick into the middle of the box, and Ashleigh Shoughro redirected the ball with her body into the goal to make the score 2-1. Brianna Moore tied the game for UNLV at 2-2 in the 56th minute thanks to a hard shot from the top of the box to the left corner. Collete Jepson assisted on the score.
The Rebels had two strong chances to score a third goal in the second half, but both Shoughro and Jepson sent their shots just wide of the goal, and the game would go into extra time. TCU ended the game in the 98th minute off Torda's second goal of the night, as she received a pass from Nguyen, drove into the box and sent a shot to the far right corner that beat UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo to the edge.
UNLV finished the night with a 19-13 edge on shots, and 8-7 on corner kicks. Lugo finished with three saves in the game, while Kelsey Walters posted six for TCU.
The Rebels will play their final home game of the year on Sunday, when they host San Diego State in a Senior Day contest at 1 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
