LAS VEGAS -
UNLV weekly soccer notes
For the second straight season the UNLV and New Mexico women's soccer teams will end the regular season against each other on Halloween, and the Rebels will be looking for some payback after falling to the Lobos 2-1 in Las Vegas last year on Senior Day. As it was last year, it will be Senior Day in Albuquerque, with the contest set to start on Saturday at 4 pm (PST).
There is more on the line besides avenging a loss however, as UNLV needs a win on Saturday to have any chance of making the MWC Tournament (the Rebels need to both win, and have TCU lose on Friday night to get the sixth and final berth in next week's conference tournament in Provo).
History is on UNLV's side though, as the team has not lost in Albuquerque since the 2003 season. The Rebels claimed a 2-1 overtime win in 2007, and topped the Lobos 2-0 in the 2005 season.
Players To Watch
The offense thus far this year has come from sophomore forward Jenna Larkin with a team-high three goals, while senior midfielder Shannon Hughes has two goals, both of which are game-winners. Forwards Collete Jepson (freshman) Ashleigh Shoughro (junior) have also both scored twice this year, while junior Amanda Forrester, senior Jamie McCoy, senior Brianna Moore, sophomore Katherine Orellana and senior Kelly Labor have all scored one goal each.
Senior Alicia Lugo meanwhile has kept up her strong play in the nets. She has a 1.04 GAA and five shutouts, and is first in the MWC with 91 saves.
Scouting New Mexico
The Lobos are experiencing a strong season in 2009, as they began the year with a 10-game unbeaten streak. They have since cooled off with a 3-4-1 mark in the last eight games, but still rank fifth in the MWC with a 3-3 record.
Leading the team is Jennifer Williams, with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points. Nicole Reed is next on the team in points with nine off two goals and five assists, while Zaneta Wyne has posted three goals this season. In goal for the Lobos is Kelli Cornell, who is holding a 0.75 GAA with 11 shutouts and 43 saves.
