LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Elliot Wronski has set a program record with a sixth Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week award, the league announced Wednesday.
The native of Cheltenham, England, played just one match last week but came through in both singles and doubles to spur the Rebels to an upset win over No. 69 UC Irvine on Friday.
Ranked 54th in the nation in doubles, Wronski and partner Luca Barlocchi rallied to defeat Wes Miller and Khumpol Issara in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (10-8).
In singles play, Wronski, ranked 111th, was battling with Miller at the top of the lineup. With the team match tied at 3, all eyes moved to court one where Wronski won it for UNLV with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker triumph to improve to 11-5 on the season.
Wronski passes former record holder Henner Nehles (five from 2003-05) but is still three away from the Lady Rebel and MWC record of nine weekly honors won by Elena Gantcheva from 2005-08.
The Rebels (6-2) are back in action with a doubleheader on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. UNLV plays UC Riverside beginning at 10 a.m. and then will face Utah State later in the day. Admission is free of charge.
Air Force's Christen Monreal was the MWC women's honoree this week.
